THIS YEAR I HAVE MORE CORN THEN STORAGE.HAVE ANY ONE TRIED TO PILE CORN ON THE GROUND SIMILER TO DRIED SHELL CORN AND PUT VENTATION FANS ,DUCT WORK THROUGH IT,TARP IT FOR SHORT TERM STORAGE? IT WORKS ON SHELL CORN. WOULD LIKE ANY INPUT ANYONE WOULD HAVE.
It depends on what part of the country you live in, what you plan on doing with the corn (shell it out later or grind it for feed) and how long you are going to leave it in the pile. If you live where it is going to stay below freezing until March or April and you plan on doing something with it by then, leaving it an open pile will be OK. But if you live where it is warmer than that, you better cover it and ventilate it. I would still do something with it before it gets too warm in the spring. If you shell it in the spring it may not be dry enough for safe storage so you will have to test the moisture then and go from there.
AFTER THINKING ABOUT IT AND TALKING IT OVER WITH THE WAR DEPT[MY WIFE] READING THE RESPONSE FROM jdtom WOULD BE CONDENSATION UNDER THE TARP FROM A NORMAL N.W. PENNA. WINTER. WITH THE FREEZE-THAW CYCLES WE HAVE, EVEN WITH THE CORN BEING 17.5% TO 18.3% MOISTURE, THE MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE COB WOULD CAUSE IT TO SWEAT UNDER THE TARP.
in the old days they made a circular crib out of snow fence. it was usually set on wooden floor ade from scrap lumber or made of corn cobs to keep the corn off the ground and then covered with a good quality tarp but not one of our modern plastic tarps.
