Just how far will people with pickers bring them to a show or gathering of corn pickers to pick with others for a day or to?I was in the picker reunion of Bob Johnsons ,and it was great to get with others like myself. Everyone there that I talked with wished it could be a annual event, and on a little bigger scale . But just of picking and maybe of plowing also!! So please give some feed back on the topic or imput of doing a simular type of event. Do not want to have it as a problem for the Half Century Show of timing or otherwise! So write back and give some thoughts!!
All depends on how much there is to do (acres) and how well organized it is. Where you got in mind? Do I have to have an Oliver to come, or can I play with my Deere? Nice pics, by the way. Olivers look good, too.
Well if the interest is good i am will to do 100 to 180 acres. I have a crib to go into also will have some friends set up a corn sheller or two to shell into a wagon and then a auger to go into two bins. I am going to get the FFA boys from school to clean out wagons , guys with older tractors hauling in a. The churches in town would make lunch ! Trying to set it up that people that come the farthest could win 100.00 of a gift cards for helping with fuel . That maybe be broken down in to three or four catagorys ,like pull type to mounted to best of show, wide row to narrow, pickers with shellers. There are a lot of ways to set it up. Even venders that for crafts to machery dealers or other people that have parts for the older pickers and combines, like chains bearings ect. can make it a two day one in case of rain . So what are your thought Maybe even a swap meet of our old toys !!
I was thinking about of the weekend right after the farm Progress show, guys could bring stuff here after a half century show and leave it for a week or two 1 Help me I need IMPUT!!!!
First off, we need your location. This would definately be something that I'd be interested in, however, the biggest problem you're going to have with all of it is getting people to bring their stuff. Trailering either a tractor and a pull type picker, or a mounted picker on a tractor is no picnic. I dont have a big enough truck or trailer to bring my mounted picker and tractor, which may be something that others who want to participate may have a problem with also. Also, the timing is a hard one for people who also farm, as the weekend after labor day is about when we get started around here. It's do-able, but it needs lotsa planning, and if you're serious about it, I believe it could be done. Again, we need a location :)
Sounds like Oliver #4 is volunteering his place to hold this event. From reading his biography, I take it he lives near Walnut, Ill. This sounds like as good a place as any [center of the corn belt and just off I80]. If it is held in early November, I would think most everyone would be done with their harvesting [in a normal year] by then. If this was the case, I would be game to participate with as many picking outfits as I could drag there. Maybe I'm just after that prize for farthest distance traveled, lol.
Yes Tom I am offering my place to host a get together of pickers. I have a place to do picking putting in a crib and have some friends that also have sellers that will shell corn into a bin at the same time. Plus others that would use the old tractors to haul in and the FFA boys to clean out wagons. I live next to town and have access to loading docks and fork lifts to unload trucks and trailers too. So am looking for some more interest to to do it on a larger scale or am going to do it for just a few of yes anyway , but the more the better!!
Yes Tony I`m real seroius about the picking for fun. I think I can work with just about any way of unloading equipment that can be done. A few of the local people with other equipment like forklifts and loading docks are willing to help and or let their docks be used . Since i am bordering the town it is easy to work with. As far as east to get to I am just off of I -80 15 miles and I-88 20 miles, also I-39 is 25 miles to to east of me. So What would be better a early show like labor day weekend or a later on like end of Oct. 1st. of Nov. ?
I would think a later one would have a better turnout, so many people are just nicely getting into the fields the weekend after labor day. If I could get my tractor running good, and get my cousin's lowboy, I would be more willing to drag my outfit out there. However, even if I cant bring the picker, I'd definately want to be there for it.

You know I'll be there! I think I will pull my H320 MM picker up there from Rantoul, about 150 miles but probably worth it!

Wow ,we are starting to see a little colors coming into the picture ! Glad to see this is catching on a little for the show still looking for some more names to call it!
I just found this forum, I usually hang out at ytmag. From reading the posts, I find out you are from Walnut, Ill. Have you ever been to the working farm show in Atkinson, Ill.? It's held the 2nd weekend after Labor day, this year, Sept 18,19&20. Combining beans and picking ear corn with vintage equipment and plowing. Oliver is the feature tractor, so if you would like to bring your tractor and picker over you would fit right in. My daughter and son-in-law live in Walnut, so I get up there once in a while. Not sure how this forum works, but if you want to e-mail me, I can tell you more about the show if you are interested. Chris
John, I vote the brown mule! I'd love to see one in action. I just missed out on one, or else I could have brought my own!
