New(old) picker question/survey

So, like I said in my last post, we got the old picker home.  My Dad wants to sell it, which is fine with me, since I already have one and somebody else might want this one. And we're working on freeing it all up and getting it operational. Now, here's the question, should he paint it so it looks nice, or sell it as the rusting hulk it currently is? We are thinking that somebody might see more potential in a painted one that looks good and is functional, even though it still needs work.  But then there is always the possibility that somebody might want to paint it himself (or herself) and be looking for one that is a diamond in the rough. So, what do you all think? Paint or no paint.
By the way, I'm still working on getting some pictures.

OK, I was looking for some feedback, not just people viewing the post. smile Come on guys, what do you think? Would you be more likely to buy one if it's painted, or would you rather it was in the original rough shape? I'm curious.

Well it depends on the paint job. But then some guys like to see original paint.I would leave it original and just make sure everything is gresed and oiled good. With the ecomonmy in the shape it is. most are not going to pay a lot for a mounted picker then have to move it. But dont cut it up. hold on to it if nothing else parts on the one you have. I cut one up and it turned out to be the last one i know of that model. But was under duress and kick myself for it daily.I'd price it a little high to keep the scrappers away and watch out for the "hen penners" . You know the guys who give you two low ball offers then walk away then come back with one higher. Send then on down the road. It will always be worth more than that high offer. Those are the jockeys and quick buck artists who are counting on treselling it at a usually exorbant profit. Try to keep the old paint , I'd say.Nothing worse than a cheap bad paint job.If you have to store it outside, then put boards under it and a tarp over it. Might not mess with the tarp .If you find someone you think is a real collecter then you can take less for it and know it will go to a good home. It might not be the best advice but at least you have one now. good luck.

Oh I was really thinking about a mounted picker.  But looked back thru the posts. You might repaint the one row. Its not a collecters item or in danger of being the last. but depending on what you think you can get out of it and whether you just enjoy tinkering with it, then you can paint or not paint. I dont think on an old one row it will affect the price that much. But then i am kind of out of touch. I see tractor jockeys taking $200.oo balers and selling them or advertising them for over a grand.confuse

RE: New(old) picker question/survey Pictures added!

Thanks for the reply.  I certainly wouldn't even think of scrapping it, if Dad can't sell it, I'll just bring it to the farm and play with it later. Here's a couple pictures of it. (And one of me and Zeke after picking some mushrooms!) We have most of it freed up, but there are a few chains that won't budge yet. I think I know which gear is giving us the problem though, so hopefully this week we can get it completely free..
