Wapsie Valley OP Seed Corn?

I see where several of you fellows have some planted. Have thought about it, but never done it. Was wondering about a few things. What population do you plant? What is the cost? Is there a source close to central VA (thinking of frt. costs)? Also wondering how it yields compared to conventional hybrids? Hybrid seed corn prices have gotten ridiculous!

It's 85-day corn.I planted in mid-May and started picking before Labor Day this year. Even with the dry year, I've been running 140 bu. an acre. Hybrid corn that was planted Memorial day weekend due to mud therefore didn't get the summer storms at the right time like the OP did, so looks much worse . . . I can't really compare them fairly.
I planted 38" rows at 23,000 final population. You can probably get up to 26,000 in 30" rows but it doesn't like the high populations some hybrids like.
I got my seed from www.openpollinated.com. Even with shipping it was still 1/3 of what some hybrid seed costs. You do get different colored ears . . . but since I'm selling this mainly for deer hunters and grinding feed, I figured I'd try it.

Liking yellow corn, wapsie is multi colored, weve been selecting, somewhat, yellow seed. The ears are the color of the seed planted. Hogs and beeves don't mind the color.

Tim, is there anyone near you who planted hybrid corn around the same time as your Wapsie Valley? Any way you could ask them about their yields? Hate to keep bugging you, but was wondering how it compared.

Also wondering is anyone knows of any University studies/tests comparing nutritional values?

The closest comparison on a neighbor's farm was a 95 day hybrid planted about the same time, except on 30" rows, running approx. 160 bu. per acre. There was some 105 day hybrid down the road a ways that has been combined and came in just under 200, but that ground got a LOT of organic amendments over the past 2 years in the form of mushroom soil and biosolids . . . . if they get the pH exactly right this winter (it's still on the low side) they could push 250. Most ground around here won't respond that well that fast, though.
