I have a 838 husker on a uni with a 6row IH 963 corn head. I currently have a lot of trash in the wagon. Is there any adjustments I can make to make it cleaner? Is a 838 a good unit. What model of husker did the best job of cleaning all the trash?
What kind of corn are you picking? I can always tell if I'm in bT corn because it is hard to snap, so I get many stalk pieces still attached to the cob, and the husker can't get all the extra trash out.
I have not planted Bt corn. A friend came over and picked to the same field with his uni 3row 737 unit and it picked very clean. So I was wondering if it had to do with my corn head or the 838 husker unit. Are there any adjustments to make?
I am not a picker expert, by any stretch of the imagination, but could you be overloading the husker unit? Travelling at the same ground speed, you will be putting twice as many ears through your unit as you friend with a three row head will. Have you tried slowing down? Just a thought.
Yes, I've tried slowwwwwinggggg down which didn't appear to help. My unit has 16 roller husking bed and the other has 12. The next thing I want to try is to have someone else run my unit and then watch the husking bed as it is picking to see if I notice anything wrong. I was hoping someone would give me suggestions for things to look for.
Is most of the trash separate from the ears, or is it stuff that's still attached? I'm not familiar with an 838, but there's probably roller tension adjustments somewhere on it like other New Idea Superpickers. I'd tighten them up when I find them. If your picker has rubber rollers running against steel rollers in the husking bed, check to make sure the lugs are all there in the steel rollers. Finally, is the fan blowing air across the bed correctly?
I agree. If your friend has snapping rollers on his header, that could make the difference. Try opening the stripper plates on your IH head enough to let more trash through but not enough to shell any corn off the ears. Be sure to have the plates open at least a quarter inch farther at the top [back] than the bottom [front].

Check to see if the husking pins on the husking rolls are in good shape. if broken or missing the the husking bed will not work as well as possible. if this unit was used for seed corn as my 737 was they did run them as they did worry about husks in the corn.
Dave i have 709 uni and a 4 row header with a 737 husking bed mine started getting trashy and my fan had gotten partialy stopped up also my manual shows that u can adjust the husking rollers .
dave i would say try a different corn head maybe or just try speeding the head up a little bit and maybe you should look into getting some different sprockets for your husking bed and try to speed it up as welll but i have to agree with the other guy on a pull type it does like 80% of the husking in the head
