Sorry, price them at $1000 ea. Your loan officer will tell you if he thinks it's too much. Good luck with your livestock. I think the next few years could be good for cattlemen if our government would just stay out of it.
I agree, NC. When the price of grain shot up, a lot of farmers in our area of SW Iowa sold their livestock and tore out their lots, corrals, pastures, and even field fences. Planted corn or beans through all of it. I even saw part and whole old farmsteads, some or them 4-5 acres, bulldozed clean off the face of the earth. Great for us--bought used gates, guardrail, posts, squeeze chute, etc. for cheap and improved our operation (cow-calf to finish). We even bought 4 working NI324 pickers for $1800, which should keep us in ear corn for a couple of generations. (The purchase of those 4 pickers led me to this cornpicker forum.) The only down side is that we ended up having trouble with neighbors (some are relatives) who thought that we should build their "half" of fences because we had cattle and they did not. We worked it out, and kept plugging along. We grow our own feed and hay, and kept most of our pastures, so we hope some of our costs are somewhat stable. Cattle prices look good right now, but only time will tell. Everything cycles back around, good, bad, and ugly.
