parts question

hi. guys new to forum i am looking at a model 311 ni two row to buy.the guy hooked it to his tractor and run it so i could see it run. at the top of the gathing chain, their is a shaft coming out of a gear box that the sporket mounts on  and pulls the chain. that shaft has a lot of slack in it. he said it has always been that way. had a lot of vines wrapped around it and i coulded see it good enough to tell if it had a bearing down. my question is should it have a lot of slack, is it made that way,are is it a bearing down.

There should be no slop in that shaft. I'm trying to remember without a book in front of me, but I think there are shims in there that can be added or removed to adjust the gear mesh. Could be as simple as that, or it could be a bad bearing, or the gears could be shot.

Hopefully this link to AGCO parts breakdown for the 324 (same parts in 311) works correctly.  http://www.agcopartsbooks.com/PartsBooksN/Viewer/book.aspx?book=agco/985787  You need to scroll down left menu bar and click on long gathering chains to get the breakdown for those boxes.

I had to give $2500 for my always-shed kept, low-use 324 with 327 husking bed. I had a 324 with 326 bed (rustbucket special) I paid $800 for and ran it 4 years until it broke a shaft and a couple sprockets. It's in the parts row now. I had a rustbucket 311 before that I got for $100 (when you had to pay to get scrap hauled away) and ran that one for 4 years before the sheet metal wore through on the snapper bottom. Put parts from that one together with parts from another junker to make one good one and sold it for $500. Lately it seems that the sky's the limit for a good 325 2-row narrow . . . . I watched a like-new one with the 327 bed sell at auction for $4500 (!).

Not sure about price in your area. A few years ago up here in SW Iowa I bought 4 working NI324 pickers for $1800 total. They used to be pretty common in this area, though, so there are still quite a few around.

Two row pickers usually bring $500 or better around here (Southern WI/Northern,IL), regardless of condition.
