I know this is a rookie question, but what is considered wide rows and what are narrow row. I have a 1 row mounted ford picker and i plant on 36" rows. but have been thinking about upgrading to a two row pull type.
NI wide-row pickers (Model NI324) were designed to pick corn that was spaced from 36 to 44 inches. The snapping rolls were set on 40-inch centers. NI narrow-row pickers (Model NI325) were designed to pick corn that was spaced from 28 to 36 inches. The snapping rolls were set on 32-inch centers. I do not know what was offered by other brand pickers. There are a few brands of pull-type pickers out there that were designed to pick 3 rows, as well. You may also find Uni-System self-propelled machines for sale in your area. Most Unis in our area were made by NI, but I think Minnie Mo made some, too. I am not familiar with other companies that made Unis, but there may be more. Unis were designed to perform many tasks, and attachments were sold for those purposes. A neighbor with a Uni has several corn heads for it, including a modified JD head designed for narrow-row corn.
Thanks for the answer. It sounds like with 36" rows i can go either way. I'm on the gulf coast of Alabama, not many pickers around here other than a few mounted fords. I'll have to head north to find one. The old farmers that had pickers around here either traded them in on combines or dragged them to the woods to rot, and with our weather it doesn't take long for it to rot into the ground.
I agree, you would be fine either way. Up here in SW Iowa, NI324s were much more common than the NI325s, so they are much cheaper now. I have no idea about your part of the country, but there are folks on this site a bit north of you. Maybe they will have suggestions. If you have to haul one in, there are some older posts on here about that. Welcome to the forum, and keep us posted on your search.
