Are you certain that #6 is for an OVAL muffler? I would think that the drawing in the parts manual would be more accurate in its shape, than what is shown.
I believe that #6 is for the early 3020 and 4020 with the large diameter round muffler
The others are for the 'A', '60', 620 and 720 tractors and the 'B', and '50', and the smallest for the 420 (Yes, the manuals for the 227 show it mounted on a JD 420)
Perhaps there is another page showing the heat shields for the 530, 630 and 730 tractors, and you might look in the last 237 parts book to see if they show anything for the OVAL mufflers on the late 3020 and 4020.
I do not know when the last 237 was made, if it was before 1969, there may not be a heat shield available, unless the one for the 30 series two cylinders would work.
#4 in the picture is for the round muffler on the 3010-4020, I will have to take some pics and see if I can post them on here. I have the 2 different oval and also the round one for the 3010-4020 muffler.
The oval one that I have for the late 3020-4020 is not of the solid type but more of the perferated type, like the bottom of the round ones for the 3010-4020. Looking at picture #6 the top is just like that on the one that I have.
Thanks Charlie - the one you have may be the one I am looking for. I have learned in my years as a JD mechanic and as a collector that JD parts catalogs dont always show the part the way it really is. Ron
I went out and took some pics. of the 2 different ovals that I have. The one with the green paint and the "John Deere" rain cap on it is for the two cylinder tractors, and the other is the one with the perforated style is for the late 3020-4020.
