Hi all. This summer I got a New Idea 326 corn picker at a local auction for $400. For that price I figured it was worth playing around with. Now that I have some free time, I've been working on getting it going. All the parts seem to be there and it seems to be in pretty good shape, but I think it sat outside for a long time. I spent a couple days getting the telescoping PTO shaft to telescope (ended up having to cut off a portion of the shield, which was also stuck), and now when I hook it up to the tractor it just immediately breaks the shear bolt that connects the PTO to the first gearbox. There's a plug on the side of the gearbox that I was able to remove, and no oil or anything else came out. Any advice or tips on what to consider next before I start tearing stuff apart? Thanks.
There is also a drain plug on the bottom. I remove it and see if anything runs out.
I know when I bought mine that gearbox was full of water. I drained it all out, put in fresh oil, and it's fine now.
How cold was it when you tried to turn it? If it has water in it, it could be frozen.
If you still have the shaft connected, it could be bound up somewhere else. Put a pipe wrench on the output shaft and see if you can get any movement at all.
Thanks for the reply. I hadn't yet noticed the drain plug on the bottom of the gearbox. It was indeed crazy cold when I was working on it. It's supposed to get up to the mid-40s this weekend; I'll see if I can get any water to drain out.
It was almost 50 degrees today. I unscrewed the bottom drain on the main gearbox and a bunch of water ran out. I turned the PTO shaft with a monkeywrench and everything came to life! @m16ty totally nailed the exact problem, very impressive! That'll teach me to wait until late fall to start a project like this one.
Going to buy some 90 weight oil tomorrow and keep working my way down the line. Hopefully the old girl will soon be ready to pick another day.

If you can open up that gearbox, I'd check it out thoroughly to make sure that the bearings aren't rusty from the water before you refill it with gear lube.
That particular gearbox is notorious for getting water inside through the vent. If the picker is being parked out in the weather, I'd suggest a better vent plug or some sort of cover over the gearbox.
