Looking for some advise on checking the air in my 708 Uni. Just got it today and checked everything over and the only thing not functioning is the air. It came from Iowa so air wasn't that important but down here in South Carolina we have to have it. I cleaned the filter for the a/c and replaced it but I'm not sure what to do next. Also what type of refrigerant does it take. Got some manuals on the way but want to get started ASAP. Any advise would be appreciated.
My guess would be that it takes R12 freon. It will run on 134A. Just need to convert the fittings and evacuate the system of the old freon if there is any. Could be many places to start as to why it doesn't work. Probably a good idea to replace the receiver drier and the expansion valve. Check to be sure the compressor clutch is working (has power to it and a ground). Who knows the compressor could be bad. Also a set of AC gauges are a big help in diagnosing air conditioning system problems. I bought a set from Harbor Freight for around $50 or so. They work fine. If I was a professional AC man I would buy nicer ones but I use mine rarely and am pleased with them. Keep us posted. I will help you all I can.
Oh, BTW, if you need a compressor BEFORE YOU BUY ONE ANYWHERE, post a picture of it. If it is a GM A6 compressor, you can go to the local auto parts store and get one. Tell them you have a 1972 impala with a 350. It'll save you a bunch of money. I priced a compressor for my Allis 7060 from AGCO and bout died when he quoted me $360 bucks. I talked to a neighbor that works for the local CASE IH dealership. He told me to call OReilly and use the Impala description from above. A reman unit cost me $127. HTH
I appreciate the info. I will definitely look around before I buy one from agco. I can get my hands on a set of gauges to check the pressure but I first need to locate all of the components. I hope to do that tomorrow.
