John Deere 237

Friend up the road has a 237 JD in good shape. What is the value of this picker ? How hard are they to mount on a 70 JD? Compared to other pickers how is their performance ?

The price is subject to the area.  Around where I am and they are non-existent probably 7-800 dollars for a very good one before trucking.  I just watched a Youtube just a few hours ago where a fellow from Missouri I believe bought one at auction on a JD 70 for 650 dollars total which tells me scrap price and it looked pretty decent w/o camera shots of the elevator bottom and so forth.  The 237 has universal mounts but still requires specific kits for the engine screens.  Definitely want to know what it came off of to know what it is potentially lacking.  There were 540 and 1000 RPM drives offered so that needs to be known as well.  Mechanically, it is a 227 updated for mounts and shields but pretty much the same for the business part but a multi-luber was available for the 237 that as far as I know was not offered for the 227.  Either can be viewed on the JD online parts catalog to know specific differences.  The IH 234 is supposed to be a little more updated versus the 237 and there seems to be a preference for it.  The big thing is corn varieties by the major seed suppliers are bred for rather easy shelling for the combine that has a header deck plate versus the rolls of a picker.  This can mean substantial loss in the head portion of the picker.  A friend up the road is handy but remember in the heat of negotiation that even though you can find one a couple hundred miles away that will mean paying trucking.  If he is asking 800 doilars and your buddies say that there others around just remember that one a couple hundred miles away will cost several hundred dollars to get home.  It would be worth it to pay a little more for the convenience even if the "going price" locally is less.  You don't know when the next local will come up for sale and if cleaning up an estate any promises will most likely be forgotten and have the sad to you story of "we did not know, we hauled it away for scrap" or "don't want to be bothered dealing with people so the scrap man is getting it."  Best of luck.  I want both a JD and IH and would consider myself lucky if one or the other was just up the road.

I would think that Multi-Luber was an option on at least the later 227 pickers.

As far as I can remember, the differences between the 227 and 237 models were, the 237 pickers had the stalk ejectors as an option, they had the 'waffle' style snapping rolls, the adjustable hood on the elevator, and the cover over the wagon elevator, plus as mentioned the side shields were solid, and incorporated a mounting step and hand rail.

The tinwork was slightly different, with the 237 having a pronounced 'knee' behind the outside gathering point, and the tall corn screen was slotted instead of the mesh screens used on the 227.
