Finally got some picks back from this fall's picking. I didn't think I had gotten any pictures, but a friend snuck over and took some pictures while I was combining soybeans in the afternoon. Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday!!
Guys, I only picked 5 acres this year, corn made about 160 bpa or so. 6 full wagons of corn, and we figured probably an average of 130 bu per wagon, as I filled them up real full, scooped them down, and filled full again. It is a 60 under the picker. As a whole, it worked very well. I had plenty of power and capacity with the sheller, but the snapping rolls didn't like the high population. Could only run in first gear, and that was too fast some times!!! I made a mistake when I was setting the planter last spring. I was shooting for 20k population, and got 32k!! Too many stalks for the snapping rolls!!! I also made the mistake of planting end rows with too sharp of corners (used to planting for a combine). That also made things difficult. I got a lot of experience backing in tight confines with a hand clutch! This year, we are planning on planting 20 acres, and I am going to do things differently. I bought a 95 combine, and am in the process of buying a corn head for it to pick the endrows and a couple of thrus. That will make the picking process a lil easier, and enable us to use a pull-type picker as well, if we so desire. I am also going to do a test run first to make sure my population is where I want it! Experience is always the best teacher!!
Always good to see someone enthusiastic about this sort of stuff. Keep up the good work, I know all about that plant population thing, except I was aiming for 30K, and only got on 26.5K. Yields were still around the 150BPA range though!
Thanks for the pictures. Dad had a 227 on a M and had the sheller also. I was 4 or 5 and went with him to hook and unhook the wagons. I like riding in the wagons when he was shelling corn the best, because I could cover up with corn and help keep warm on though cold winter days.
