Ear Corn Harvest 2008

Anyone else have any pictures or stories to share about your experiences of picking ear corn this fall? Or picking with a picker-sheller? It seems like there was more posted here last year than there has been so far this year. So if you got out your "toys" this fall and used them a bit, let the rest of us know about it!

I picked some corn this year with my John Deere 70 Diesel and JD 227 picker and no. 50 sheller.  Corn was very good.  Didn't get to pick much though as my PTO clutch went out.  I got some pictures somewhere while it was still running.  I'll try to get them on here in the next day or so.  Josh

Hello,

Im new and just thought I would share some pictures of my 720 gas with a 237 mounted picker.  I just bought the picker this year.  It had been sitting outside for about 8 years and with a little work I was able to get it to pick corn again.  I picked about 1500 bushels with it, which is about how much I do each year. If anybody runs across any more of these or parts I would be interested. I would like to find one with the corn stalk ejector.  I also have a JD 60 with a New Idea mounted picker. It has the 309 gathing unit with the 8 roll husking bed. I had left it mounted just incase my 237 did not work out.  I did pick one load with it just to keep things loose. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Now there's an outfit I haven't seen in use for many years! In my area most of the pickers were New Idea. I had a 237 about 22 years ago and used it for 2 seasons. I had it mounted on a 620 the first year and on a 3020 Diesel the second year. I also had a 50 Sheller for it and used it for a few loads that second year. Then I started combining more of the corn so I sold the whole works.

I feed out 10 diary fedder steers a year with the corn I pick. I have one crib that holds 900 to 1000 bushel and one that holds around 500.  With no more cattle than I have. I thought I would use a corn crib to store my corn and let mother nature dry it. Then i just grind the ear corn for the steers.  It has worked out well and I enjoy working with old pickers. Just something about the old mounted ones and being able to slice anywhere threw a field.

This is the latest addition to my collection for 2008.  It is a late model John Deere 227 that I found on an auction this past summer.  I mounted it on my John Deere 3010 diesel.

Nice find you have there! It looks like it has quite a few options on it, like the tall corn screens, fender rods and the wagon elevator extension. Does it have the spiral snapping rolls in it? How was the corn yielding?

No, it does not have the spiral rolls. I have a set from a 237 that I had hoped to use but after some investigation I don't think they are the same as the 227 takes. Now I will be on the hunt for the right ones. The corn in the pictures was yielding in the 150's.

I also have a John Deere 237 picker and the 50 sheller to go with it.  I'll have to shine that up during next year's harvest and post some pictures.  I'd also like to find a New Idea outfit before next season.

So far these are the only pictures I have found of the picker.  Also have the combine in the pics, same field.

How do you like the Deere (s) as compared to the IH's?

I have never been around IH stuff.  My family always had JD pickers.  They weren't always on JD tractors back then (Oliver dealer was grandpa's friend), but we always had JD pickers.  The one I have now ( JD 227 with no 50 sheller) was owned by a couple of grandpa's neighbors.  It doesn't have very many acres on it, and works pretty good for it's age.  Never been around any other color pickers.
