Maybe I'm the only one who is interested in this, but several of you have posted pictures of your corn-picking outfits pulling wagons that are vintage of the corn picker era. I think it would be neat if you identified the wagons in your pictures as to brand (box, running gear and hoist) and approximate age. If you know any of the history of the wagon (i.e. my grandfather bought it new in 1952 and it's been kept inside ever since, etc.) that would be interesting also. It seems that too many of these wagons are being relegated to "junk" duty until they are beat to nothing, then they are scrapped or the wood ones are burned and then they are gone forever. Just my 2 cent's worth!
(BTW, the wagon you can see "hiding" behind the NI picker on my avatar pic is a Nu-Bilt 165 bu Giant Flare Box on a JD 1065 running gear with a Wards hoist)
Great topic also ! The wagon behind the mounted picker is a Oliver steal flair box on a Electric 5 ton gear,the other is a Heider wooden box on a JD 1065 gear, I also have a wooden Oliver Flair Box on Electric 5 ton gear.I don`t know the bu.sizes of them thou!
I like this one. Here's how my wagons shake out. First picture: the wagon hooked to the picker is a homemade box on a later JD gear. Can't remember the hoist, probably a Midwest brand (very popular around here). The wagon in the background is a Dultmeier 5 in 1 box on an IH gear, Midwest hoist probably. Second picture is a Weir (now Omaha Standard) box on an early JD gear (with the springs) and a Midwest hoist. Third picture is a wagon we keep for parades and such (wedding in these pics). It's not mine, but is a friends grandpa's. Its a Heider 8x12 foot box on a later JD gear with a JD hoist. The last pic (another wedding pic) is a JD 8x10 foot box on a "middle" JD gear (long hubs, no springs) with a Midwest hoist. I put a new floor, floor stringers, and side stringers on this wagon this summer. Found the tounge and groove for the floor stacked in a hay loft of an old barn. Came out of an old house and was in real good shape. Im the guy closest to the camera in the last one.
A few of our older wagons are Emco's, which were built right near my hometown, they usually put them on Electric 5 ton running gears. Rest are Killbros, and one Kory.
My Dad had one Anthony all steel barge box, one Dorman wooden barge box, and one Heider wooden barge box, all without hoists and mounted on Westendorf running gears. He used a belt driven speedjack to drive the elevators and a JD rocker type hoist. I think it was made by Fleck Welding at Gretna, Nebraska.
Glad to see there is some interest in this topic out there! I'll post a few pics I took this fall of some other wagons we have around here. The first one is an Anthony flare box on an Anthony gear with a Lundell hoist under it. My grandpa bought this one new back in the 1950's. The next one is a wood flare box that my grandpa built. Its on a New Idea gear and has some nameless Tractor Supply-type hoist under it. The last one is a Wards barge box (built by Durabilt) on an JD 1064 gear with a Lundell bed hoist under it. My grandpa also bought this one in the 1950's. We have 5 of the Nu-Bilt flare boxes I identified earlier, a Heider barge wagon and I have 2 Stan-Hoist 7 x 12 barge wagons in the shed also. I'm working on locating more of these types of wagons - I like collecting things like this!
I have a 150 bu. Kill Bros. gravity box on a NH 15 gear, a 125 bu. EMCO gravity box on a NH 15 gear, an older 125 bu. galvanized Little Giant gravity box on a long-hub JD 953 gear, a newer 125 bu. galvanized Little Giant gravity box on a short-hub JD 963 gear, a 150 bu. Parker gravity box on an Electric gear, an unknown 125 bu. gravity box on an Electric gear, a 125 bu. Fav-O-Rit galvanized box on an Allis-Chalmers 701 gear, and a 7x10 wood barge box (not homemade but manufacturer unknown) on an A-C 701 gear with a Midwest hoist.
I have two matching New Holland/Farmec galvanized gravity wagons. Approx. 125 bushel. Both on matching JADCO gears. Red trim, Red sideboards, Red gear and yellow wheels, looks great behing my MM stuff
