Rantoul Show

After reading Mike's post about the wagons, my question is do the wagons need hoists or can they dump them without hoists? I have some flair beds I've thought about bringing just to help out. By the way this is my first post on here so be gentle. Dale

They really need hoists. They don't like to dump the ones without hoists unless YOU shovel it off.  I did that once, not fun in 90 degree heat.

Hey atuck Thanks for the reply. I don't think I can keep up with the number of pickers that will be there. After a short while my #14 scoop gets hot & tired. thanks.Dale

They had a wagon lift set up and dumping non-hoist equipped wagons at the first Rantoul show. Why don't they set that up again ? I thought that really drawed peoples attention !

There are too many different length wagons to try and use the wagon lift efficiently. All you would get done is move it due to the many different overhangs on all the different wagons that show up. Think about it, we dump and shell corn most of the day and if we can hook up a hose, hit the lever, and the load of corn unloads itself, why would we want to shovel it off, or take the time to keep moving the lift? If you want to bring a non-hoist equipped wagon, plan on bringing someone to shovel the load into the elevator, or more than likely, the wagon will get loaded one time.....

I had a hoist at our picking show the last two years and the hoist is very forgiving and with some belting around the hopper it gave flexibility to dumping !

With the wagon shortage there is I would think that there is other ways !!

I agree with Kevin. there should be a way to figure out a lift system for the flare box wagons. If not, does that mean we all need to go out and buy a hydraulic wagon to be able to come to the Rantoul show to pick corn? I was gonna bring two pickers down. Might have to rethink that one and only bring one picker and a wagon....  no

You have to remember this is a 4 day show and there is only x amount of corn.  We have to slow down somewhere.  If there are as many pickers as 2009 ( I bet there will be  more than 09) then I don't know if there will be enough corn for all four days.  I know it is no fun to wait on wagons but would you rather have no corn to pick.

Maybe I should bring my working John Deere wagon lift.  I have three of them now.   Mike

You don't have to go buy another wagon, just buy a midwest or like hoist and put it on. Think of how much it will improve the value of your current wagon to have a hoist on it!! Guess someone needs to bring a forklift so we can just pick the front of the wagon up. You don't have to have a hoist, but have someone there that is willing to run the scoop to unload the wagon. Not trying to be a pain in the ass here guys, but why make playing more work for the people dumping and shelling corn??? We already hear enough comments about not emptying the wagons quick enough, so why make it even slower by either having to shovel a load off, or move a lift forward and backward so we don't have a mess on the ground?

Remember, this isn't a race. This is a unique group of people out to have a very fun filled, safe, enjoyable, relaxing long weekend. They will meet up with people they already know, or meet new people who you will get to know, and demonstrate some really neat old equipment to a group of people who either used it in their earlier days, or heard about their friends or relatives using it. If you are going to get all torqued up over not having a wagon waiting on you all the time, are you really there to have fun and enjoy the weekend and life???? If you are waiting on a wagon to be unloaded, that would be the perfect time to either try and adjust your picker to do its best job in the field, or even meet new people. This is a four day show and corn is still needed to be picked on Sunday.

If you are coming to pick corn: Be prepared to pick corn one way. More than likely even a gear or two slower than your picker will take it, and by doing this, you will be able to keep moving longer than if you go as fast as you can and have to wait longer on wagons. By the responses on this and other boards, it sounds like there will be a bunch of pickers. This won't be an issue if everyone understands and shows up with the correct attitude mentioned above. If everyone goes as fast as they can, what about the spectators or even other picker owners who come on Saturday or Sunday to see or run pickers? Who is going to tell them that all the corn is picked and they came for nothing???? What would you think at that point?

I can see Shawn's point. I never even thought about all the diffrent style wagons at the show. The lift would be a neat display, but only if you have a handful of guys to do the work. The guys shelling are already working there butts off to keep up, why would they want to do more work ?

I thik the pickng one way might have to be the way to go to have enough corn for everybody to demonstrate their picker or combine. I noticed in 2009 that it would help if the mounted pickers would skip over some rows when there are pull types in line, especially for the machines that pick on the left side.

You're right rfdeere.  Picking one way is how they have tried to do it in the past but then you get one guy who decided to pick both ways and then everyone starts doing it.  From what I understand they are going to try to police it better this year.

Last I knew around 160 or 170.   The combines will take part of that.

If I would have my choice of unloading wagons all day I would take the flair boxes with a lift over barge boxes even with hyd. ,you don `t have to clean corners and it just flows out !!
But if I want to pick longer and am filling my on crib the fewer and bigger loads with the BARGE boxes are Great ! Side dumps are Great to !!

WHat ? doesnt anybody have any barge wagons with false endgates to be cranked back? lolMy favorite wagon was one that had a matel bed but you folded it up and put the the two sides on it and it became a hopper bed. That with a rocking bolster was the best corn wagon i ever had bar none. Like an idiot i put big side boards on it and ruined it going thru a ditch two fast.

Took two barge wagons to Rantoul last night. There were a few pickerS there already and the fields looked like they had been opened up.
