Has anyone besides this guy I know (Ok i'll admit it was me) ever start to pick corn and get to the end of the row only to see a row of nice yellow corn laying on the ground? You would think that I would have remembered to close the door on the wagon. Mind you this is not the first time it has happened to me in all my years of picking corn.
Yes, I will admit that I have done this. I also pick a lot of ear corn and I now have all my gravity box doors on the left side so I can see right away from the seat of the tractor if I left the door open. The worse mistake I did when I was farming full time back in the 80's, is when I had a JD 6620 with a 6 row head with the unloading auger folded back and left on, leaving a trail of shelled corn for about 80 rods. My Dad said don't feel too bad because the critters have to eat to. Good luck next time. CornPickerBob
I left my rear gate open last weekend but I had to stop and noticed when I jerked the machine the gate had spilled out some corn and I closed it and picked up about 50 ears of corn. I turned a 100 cows and calves out on it on friday should get all the rest cleaned up shortly.
Yes I've done that. I also forgot to close a bottom elevator door on the combine once. And then this morning, I started putting corn in one crib and I had forgotten that the shelled corn screen was open in the elevator, so of course had no tarp or tub under it to keep kernals out of the gravel . . . .
One of the last years we picked a large amount of corn, probably 1984 (I know I was home for Christmas from college). Dad was picking and my brother and I were each hauling wagons home and filling cribs.
The corn was good and we were going about 4 miles home, so we were keeping a steady pace. Somehow, my brother forgot to close a wagon door.
We were in an 80 rod long field, but dad only made it about halfway when he realized the ears were still banging off the bottom of the wagon, because the corn wasn't piling up.
I wondered why I didn't pass my brother on my way back to the field. When I got there, him and dad were picking up the ears. It didn't take long for the three of us to clean it up, at least they were in a neat windrow.
Thanks for reminding me of that, I'll have to bring it up at Thanksgiving dinner. Dad's gone now but my brothers kids would probably like to hear the story.
Had that happen acouple years ago while combining corn it was getting dark and we were finishing up and Dad was giving me instuctions for where he wanted the wagans parked for the neighbor running the combine and he left the gate open part way on the wagon and long story short we had some corn to pick up in the morning.
I personally Have not done this but knew a older gentleman that was running a Gleaner combine with a six row head and after 2 full rounds discovered the rock trap on the feeder house was open , it was two wagon loads or ear cor to pickup !!
