I am looking into picking and cribbing some ear corn next year. I have a picker, tractor, gravity wagons, ETC. However, shellers are few and far between out by me. I had a crazy idea the other day. Would it be possible to take the sheller unit out of an old combine and rig it up to shell corn out of a crib? I know very little about combines, so i am wondering if it could be done without too much trouble and too much money.
I still do custom corn shelling, but know of a few guys that would use their combine to shell out their cribs or piles. One guy used his skidsteer to dump corn into the head. Another had bought a set of drags and either dumped the corn into the corn head and one made a hopper that dumped the corn into the feeder house. Hope this helps. You have to keep pushing the cobs out of the way. One of the guys made a hopper for the back and run an ear corn elevator into wagons. You can do what ever you need to make it work for you. Good Luck.
There is a story in farmshow magazine about a guy who uses his gleaner F to shell. I would just add a box to t he feederhouse like he did and run the corn in. Or just get an old combine so you can leave it on the combine nd dont worry about taking the shelling parts off. The combine makes a good self propelled sheller.
I asked an old farmer this weekend this same question and what he said to do was buy an old New Idea corn picker with a sheller unit rather than an elevator. Take the corn head off and build a hopper infront of the machine and shell away. He said it would be faster and more effiecent than say a John Deere 43 sheller. He said the New ideas will take out all the cob, wont jam up with a rock, are easy to fix, the parts are cheap, and i could have this project all complete for around $500. Thanks for all your input everybody!
I doubt your gonna find a usable New Idea picker/ Sheller for $500.
