Hello, I'm new to the forum but have always been a sucker for corn pickers. I've owned several throughout the years (NI mounted 2 row, AC 1 row, JD 100, JD 120, and a 1 row NI). I had kind of got out of row crops in the last few years but my kids wanted to plant some corn so I put out a few acres this year.
I picked up a NI 324 picker with a 327 husking bed that a barn had fell on and damaged the elevator and it also had been sitting outside for several years after it was removed from the barn. I've got the elevator off and I'm thinking about cutting the bend out and fabricating a new section but would love to just find a replacement elevator ( if anybody knows of one in the middle TN area I'd be interested).
The main question I have is on the head gathering chains. On the inside of each row there are 2 sets of sprockets. My picker only has a chain on the bottom set of sprockets on each row and nothing on the top set. What I'm wondering is are two inside chains needed on each row and somebody just robbed them off or is only one set needed? The reason I ask is it looks like the way it is (only a chain on the bottom) it would still gather the stalks ok and looking at it it appears that you can swap the chain from the bottom to the top if needed, depending on conditions.
Both top and bottom gathering chains are required for best flow of stalk however you may get by. I have new gathering chains and possibly used available, most other picker parts too! (unifarmor@gmail.com)
