A guy that rents ground up the road from me pulled up my driveway yesterday and asked if I was the one with the corn picker. I said yes I was. He went on to say that he's got about an acre of corn still standing that he didn't want to go to waste and was wondering if I wanted to pick it. He said if I wanted to do it I could just have the corn otherwise he'd just mow it down. I went to look at it and the weeds are starting to come up pretty good and it's fairly hilly but not impossible so I told him I'd give it a shot. I'm fairly certain I'm going to get some weeds wrapped up in my rolls and/or chains so I'm going to try to run my snoots high so they're just under the ears to minimize the weed tangles. If it doesn't work out I don't really care, I don't get many opportunities to actually use my picker and I was planning on running it in my towns parade in July anyways so I'll just leave it mounted til then. I'm going to go over Tuesday to try it and weathermans calling for 85 and sunny so we'll see how it goes.
So in review let's spell out pros and cons
Pros: free corn, opportunity to use picker
Cons: hilly, weed choked field, 85 degrees
Stay tuned....
heres some pics of the field

I would be over there so quick even with a pick up and a bucket.I know a lot of guys did run their pickers up highto make up for weeds, different row sizes. If you're waitin on me your waistin time
You should get along fine. You can run your snouts above the weeds and get most of the corn. Odds are even if you get into the weeds your rolls won't wrap up much if at all. I have picked in worse conditions and got along ok. Mike
We pick 30" rows with a NI324W, so we run the snoots about a foot off the ground using a fixed bar in place of the lift cylinder. We lose very little due to that position. Those weeds look mostly like mustard, without too much grass. We always have more trouble with grass (giant foxtail, which is mostly just on the end rows, especially) than weeds. Let us know how it works.
