Looking into different varieties for ear picking. Modern varieties shell too easy causing high loss. I have heard people talking about open pollinated. Can anybody tell the good or the bad?
I like Wapsie Valley , it yields good and stock love it. The only problem I have with it is its standability. This is a problem with most open pollinated varieties though.
Wapsie Valley is a great variety to pick, doesn't shell as easily in field, husks good, key to improving standability is planting at lower populations - which gives bigger ears- and getting seed from someone who selects for standabilty. It won't compete yield wise with hybrids on highly fertile ground but will come close or beat it on challenging ground. I have good source for seed if you want some
