A fellow not far from me has a 226 picker that has not seen the light of day for more than 30 years. He told me it is the back corner of their barn and he is interested in getting it out of there. He asked if I might be interested, so I think I might go check it out. Were these primarily used on A and B tractors? He has a couple old letter models along with a 50, so I will ask and see if he knows what his dad used it on. I thought if it was decent, it would be good just to save it. I have a 52 B, maybe stick it on there to take to a show. Anyone know what year they quit making these? When I go land look, I'll try to get some pictures. However, knowing this guy, there may be 14 things in front of it in the barn, so I better bring a big flashlight.....
If he had it on a "50", I would think that it would mount on a late 'B', but these pickers were very model specific, when it came to the mounting brackets, as were the early 227's until the universal mounts came out, so check and see that the mounts are all there.
My Dad had one mounted on his 1937 "A", I have the operators manual for one he, and his brothers had bought in 1941 "the first new cornpicker we owned". I used to have a complete 226 and some spare parts that I bought from a man at Peabody, KS.
It would be cool to stick it on an "A" I think those 226's had a wheel under the nose cone somewhere to help carry the weight better. I thought I read somewhere back in the day a lot of people would break axles if they put them on a "B" I think all pickers are awesome but the ones that are on the tractors they were made for are that much cooler to me. The 227 came out in '52 to go on the first numbered JD tractors (50, 60) and the 237 was introduced for the New Generation tractors.
Did you buy the 226 picker? It will fit on an A, B 50 and 60 per the parts books. With special parts, it will also fit on a Model GM and late G.
I have an almost new radiator screen for one - it should fit an "A" or B...and quite a few NOS parts...
Well it is actually a 227 picker after looking at it. It was on his 50. It doesn't look too bad for sitting as long as it has (inside). We have to get it out of his barn yet. Friend may put it on his 70 LP. I have pictures and will try to get them posted.
